Home > Programs > Personal Enrichment > Discovering Indigenous Art
Explore distant cultures and beliefs through indigenous art forms from around the world. Your journey begins at home with an investigation of the spiritual aspects of Native American rock art. You will create your own painting based on age-old rock art techniques. In Australia, you will learn how aboriginal art functions as a symbolic form of storytelling. Ultimately, you'll recreate your own personal stories, dreams and memories utilizing "sand painting" --an ancient ephemeral aboriginal art method. Next, you'll discover the mythic importance of African ceremonial masks. You'll construct a mask imbued with your own personal history while learning to use carving tools, dry mold, and acrylic paint to create, shape and decorate your mask. Finally, your tour will take you to the Polynesian Islands where you'll learn about the religious and social significance of tattoo ornamentation and design. You won't be tattooed in this class, but you will have the opportunity to study the art of Henna, a washable form of “tattooing” that is practiced throughout South Asia. No previous art experience is required for this course.

Susan Sveda-Uncapher: Connecting Campus and Community
Susan Sveda-Uncapher, Associate Lecturer at UW-Eau Claire, received her MFA degree in sculpture from the University of Chicago where she studied on a full scholarship. She is also the recipient of the prestigious Bush Artist Fellowship for Visual Arts. As an educator, Susan has taught art classes for students at the youth, university, and adult/nontraditional student levels. When Susan isn’t in the classroom, she manages an active schedule in the artistic life of the Eau Claire area. In recent years, she’s played a key role as a designer for the Chippewa Valley Museum’s newest exhibits. On February 1st, a solo exhibition of Susan’s work, Love and Other Strange Stories, will be on display at the Heyde Center for the Arts in Chippewa Falls, WI.
