Have you ever woken after a night of drinking and had a friend tell you that you went to bed with a stranger? Or maybe someone just hit on at the bar and it made you uncomfortable. What if you had sex with one of your good friends but never said yes?

Each one of these situations is an example of sexual assault. Sexual assault can range anywhere from words, to kissing, to rape. Drinking significantly increases the risk of sexually assault, as your actions can be easily misinterpreted or misjudged by yourself and others.

  • Students who get drunk at least once per week are 75% more likely to be sexually assaulted than those who get drunk less than once per week. (www.Jointogether.org. 2005)

Engaging in such activities while passed out and/or unable to give consent constitutes sexual assault. No one asks to be assaulted, and it's nothing you owe to someone. It's not about sex. If you have been assaulted, get help ASAP. Be wary of others' intentions and keep your eye on your drink. If you suspect your drink or your friend's drink was drugged, stick together. Get home safely.

  • According to the survey from Indiana State University, 44% of males reported that they use drinking games in order to increase their chance of sexual activity with another player (2004).

Steer Clear of Dangerous Situations:

  • Keep track of your drink
  • Avoid drinking from large punch bowls
  • Walk with friends and walk with confidence
  • Make sure you and your friends are all accounted for when you leave the party
  • Drink in moderation. You'll want to remember any fun you do have the next day, anyway
