Career Timetable for Advisor/Advisee Discussions
Freshman year

Assess the level of a student's interest in the major. If the student seems uncertain, refer to:

  • SIGI 3, a computerized career assessment program available on-line to all UW-Eau Claire students and staff
  • Career Services to meet with a career counselor
  • The Career Discovery Center, Schofield 230, for more information about majors and careers.

If the student seems certain about the major:

  • Connect the student with related student organizations
  • Help the student begin to think about what he/she would do with the major after college by referring the student to:
    • Making a Major Decision programs
    • The Career Discovery Center for information about related careers
    • SIGI 3 - for career information
Sophomore year

Again, assess the level of a student's interest in the major. If uncertain, refer to Career Services.

If you are in a major with admission requirements, assess the student's chances of getting into the major. If the student's grade point is not high enough, consider:

  • Referring the student to the Academic Skills Center for skills assessment, tutoring and study strategies
  • Referring the student to Career Services to explore alternative careers or other schools.

If the student will probably remain in your major:

  • Explore a minor with students not in a comprehensive major
  • Talk to the student about career paths or specializations within your major
  • Encourage the student to do informational interviewing and/or job-shadowing using Ask An Alum and Friends
  • Encourage the student to begin exploring internships, if appropriate. Refer to
    • Internship Center in Schofield 230
    • Informational sessions done by Career Services
    • Online Internship information
  • If graduate school is required for the student's career goal, encourage the student to begin researching graduate schools in the Career Discovery Center as well as graduate/professional school information online
  • Make the student aware of student organizations related to your major
  • Encourage the student to attend Internship Mania held each February
  • Introduce the student to national organizations and/or journals in your major
  • Encourage service learning projects related to the major/career.
Junior Year
  • Work with the student to obtain an internship if appropriate.
  • Help students interested in graduate school to set up a timeline and attend a Graduate School Workshop.
  • Encourage independent study or collaborative research.

If the student intends to find a job right after college:

  • Encourage the student to attend the Career Conference if interested in working after college
  • Make certain the student has signed up with the Blugold Careerlink
  • Refer the student to Career Services to work on a resume and identify potential employers
  • Encourage the student to attend Internship Mania
  • Help the student network.
Senior Year
  • Help students decide on post-graduate education choices if appropriate. Make students aware of timelines.
  • Help students understand the skills they have learned in your major and how to express them to interviewers.
  • Continue to encourage independent study.
  • Help students network with potential employers.
  • If a student who is not going on for more schooling has not made contact with Career Services by this time, strongly encourage him/her to do so to develop a job search strategy.
