Freshman year
Assess the level of a student's interest in the major. If the student seems uncertain, refer to:
- SIGI 3, a computerized career assessment program available on-line to all UW-Eau Claire students and staff
- Career Services to meet with a career counselor
- The Career Discovery Center, Schofield 230, for more information about majors and careers.
If the student seems certain about the major:
- Connect the student with related student organizations
- Help the student begin to think about what he/she would do with the major after college by referring the student to:
- Making a Major Decision programs
- The Career Discovery Center for information about related careers
- SIGI 3 - for career information
Sophomore year
Again, assess the level of a student's interest in the major. If uncertain, refer to Career Services.
If you are in a major with admission requirements, assess the student's chances of getting into the major. If the student's grade point is not high enough, consider:
- Referring the student to the Academic Skills Center for skills assessment, tutoring and study strategies
- Referring the student to Career Services to explore alternative careers or other schools.
If the student will probably remain in your major:
- Explore a minor with students not in a comprehensive major
- Talk to the student about career paths or specializations within your major
- Encourage the student to do informational interviewing and/or job-shadowing using Ask An Alum and Friends
- Encourage the student to begin exploring internships, if appropriate. Refer to
- Internship Center in Schofield 230
- Informational sessions done by Career Services
- Online Internship information
- If graduate school is required for the student's career goal, encourage the student to begin researching graduate schools in the Career Discovery Center as well as graduate/professional school information online
- Make the student aware of student organizations related to your major
- Encourage the student to attend Internship Mania held each February
- Introduce the student to national organizations and/or journals in your major
- Encourage service learning projects related to the major/career.
Junior Year
- Work with the student to obtain an internship if appropriate.
- Help students interested in graduate school to set up a timeline and attend a Graduate School Workshop.
- Encourage independent study or collaborative research.
If the student intends to find a job right after college:
- Encourage the student to attend the Career Conference if interested in working after college
- Make certain the student has signed up with the Blugold Careerlink
- Refer the student to Career Services to work on a resume and identify potential employers
- Encourage the student to attend Internship Mania
- Help the student network.
Senior Year
- Help students decide on post-graduate education choices if appropriate. Make students aware of timelines.
- Help students understand the skills they have learned in your major and how to express them to interviewers.
- Continue to encourage independent study.
- Help students network with potential employers.
- If a student who is not going on for more schooling has not made contact with Career Services by this time, strongly encourage him/her to do so to develop a job search strategy.
