How to Get Started

Visit the Career Discovery Center, Monday - Friday, 8 - 4:30

First Year GOAL: Identify your interests.

  • Go to Career Services
    • Research careers and majors of interest in the Career Discovery Center
    • Meet with Career Services staff
  • Explore academic disciplines and career options
    • Take introductory electives that interest you
    • Enroll in Gen 250, Academic & Career Exploration
    • Talk with faculty
  • Attend Explore Your Possibilities Week
  • Take a career assessment to learn about your interests, skills and values
  • Meet with your academic advisor
  • Use the Explore Majors and Careers section of the Career Services website

Second Year GOAL: Explore your career possibilities

  • Research careers
    • Conduct informational interviews: find contacts in Ask an Alum & Friends and talk with advisors, faculty, friends, and family
    • Use online resources such as WISCareers & SIGI 3
    • Research in the Career Discovery Center
  • Select a major and minor
  • Register with Blugold CareerLink
  • Begin building your network
    • Join career-related student organizations and professional associations
    • Attend Career Conference, Internship Mania and Nursing and Health Care Professionals Fair
  • Explore experiential education opportunities
    • Internships
    • Student/Faculty Research Opportunities
    • Study Abroad/National Student Exchange
    • Find career related part-time/summer jobs
  • Begin developing your resume and portfolio

Third Year GOAL: Focus your goals and build your credentials

  • Develop skills
    • Obtain a career-related internship
    • Volunteer for career-related organizations and events
    • Obtain leadership roles in student organizations
    • Participate in faculty/student research and directed studies
  • Continue to build your network
    • Talk to friends, family, advisors, faculty and colleagues in professional associations
    • Complete informational interviews
    • Join professional associations related to your career goals
  • Refine your resume and portfolio

Fourth Year GOAL: Graduate and prepare for your future.

Get a Job

  • Be able to articulate the type of position you want
    • Take a comprehensive inventory of your skills and abilities
    • Find descriptions of positions in which you are interested
  • Locate potential employers
    • Utilize Blugold Careerlink
    • Research employers in the Career Discovery Center
    • Use the Job Search section of the Career Services website
    • Use your Network of contacts
    • Attend the Career Conference and Nursing & Healthcare Professional Fair
  • Update your cover letter, resume and portfolio
    • Have your resume reviewed in Career Services
  • Update your information in Blugold CareerLink and apply for appropriate positions
  • Practice interviewing
    • Make an appointment with Patty Practice
    • Meet with a Career Services staff person to review your mock interview
