How Career Services Can Help

To learn more, get a referral from a counselor for an assessment, or schedule an appointment with a career counselor, call 836-5358 or stop by Schofield 230.

Strong Interest Inventory

The Strong Interest Inventory compares your responses on a variety of questions (what subjects you like, what activities you enjoy, what types of people you like to be with, what occupations you feel positively about) to the answers of people of different types and occupations. It then provides you information about:

  1. Your overall interest patterns and orientation to work
  2. How your profile compares to that of people in 109 occupations
  3. How you like to learn, work, assume leadership and take risks.

The Strong requires a counselor referral and there is fee.*

Myers Briggs Type Indicator

Although the MBTI is not a “career test,” it can provide useful information in the career counseling process. The test is designed to measure four dimensions of one’s personal style – whether we like to focus our attention internally or externally; how we take in information; how we make judgments or draw conclusions; and how we relate to the outer world. This can help you understand how you make decisions, the work environment in which you are most comfortable, which kinds of tasks are learned most easily, etc.

The MBTI requires a counselor referral and there is a fee*

Self-Directed Search (SDS)

The Self-Directed Search (SDS) is the most widely used career interest inventory. The SDS is an easy-to-use, self-administered test that helps individuals explore occupations that best suit their interest and skills. This tool explores aspirations, activities, competencies, occupations, and other self-estimates and correlates them to occupations that best fit. If you are interested in this tool, stop into Career Services (Schofield 230) or call 836-5358 to set up a time to take it.

The SDS has a fee*

SIGI 3

SIGI 3 On-Line is a self-directed, interactive computer program designed to help you explore career options and make informed decisions. To learn more about yourself, complete the Self-Assessment section of SIGI 3

Your answers are saved so that you may return to it at any time. UW-Eau Claire students can access SIGI 3 using your UW-EC Username and Password.

WISCareers

WISCareers is an Internet site developed by the University of Wisconsin System. It allows you to assess your career interests, work values and workplace skills. Once you have taken any of the inventories, you can enter your scores and learn about occupations that match your inventory results.

The site is located at wiscareers.wisc.edu. You need a registration code to access the site. This is available from the Career Associates in the Career Discovery Center, Schofield 230.

Card Sorts

Card Sorts allow an individual to explore sample majors, occupations and skills depending on the interests of the person. There are several types of card sorts available at Career Services including:

  • Career Skills
  • Personality
  • Values
  • Occupations
  • UW-Eau Claire Majors

Stop by the Career Discovery Center, Schofield 230, to use the card sorts. Career Associates are available to help you with the card sorts and to answer any questions you have about any self-assessment options available.

* Fees associated with each assessment represent the cost of testing materials. No student, however, will be denied the use of a career assessment instrument because of an inability to pay the fee.
