Data: (1) Copy all files in DeptDir\Geog\Foust\Urban\Out\Urban1 to your file space. (2) There are ArcGIS and dBase files. ArcGIS (1) Start ArcGIS and load up the COUNTY file (2) Add the CBSA_INDEX (dbf) file. (3) Join the COUNTIES geography file to the CBSA_INDEX FILE. (4) Open the ArcToolbox. We now want to dissolve (remove internal boundaries) of all counties that have the same CBSA CODE. Make sure you follow the graphic carefully. We want to sum the population of all counties in each CBSA (5) Open your “dissolved” shape file’s attribute table and select the polygon that has no CBSA CODE. (6) Start the Editor. Go to Edit-Delete to delete all the non-CBSA counties. Stop editing and save your edits. (7) Add a new field to your “dissolved” shape file’s attribute table. Name it “Area” and make it a “double” field. (8) Right Click on the Area field and select “Calculate geometry”. Calculate the area of the CBSAs in square miles. (9) Add a new field to your “dissolved” shape file’s attribute table. Name it “Density” and make it a “double” field. (10) Calculate population density per square mile. (11) Make two maps. One of Metro and Micro CBSA’s. One of Population Density per Square Mile. Make sure you put the States on the maps. (12) Copy each map to the clipboard and “Paste-Special” each map into a Word document. Put your name and Urban Project 1 on each page of the document. (13) Save the document as your email name_Urban 1.docx. (14) Put it in the Urban\In\Urban 1 folder in my file space. |
