WOMEN'S TENNIS PLACES THIRD AT WHITEWATER INVITE

WHITEWATER - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team faced last year's conference champion UW-La Crosse or runner-up UW-Whitewater at some point in every bracket but still took enough points to claim third behind those two teams.

The home team had 41 points while La Crosse put up 38. The Blugolds' 25 put them in front of UW-Stout's 21 and the rest of the teams did not acquire more than 12.

No Eau Claire doubles team had lost one set coming into today's invite, but all fell short of the top place today. The No. 3 team of Liz Deprey (Jr.-Green Bay/Notre Dame) and Kristin Neuman (Jr.-Green Bay/Ashwaubenon) did make it to the championship match where the faced La Crosse. They just lost the first set 6-7 and then fell 3-6, but the Eagles duo took the championship with a 7-3 tiebreaking set.

The No. 2 tandem of Laura Geissler (Sr.-Coon Rapids, MN) and Courtney Lynne (Fr.-Rochester, MN/Mayo) took third place over Beloit by scores of 6-3 and 6-2. They did have to squeak by UW-Oshkosh in the opening round by posting a score of 9-8 and then winning the tiebreaker 7-4.

The highest singles finish was third place, achieved twice today. It occurred easily for No. 1 singles player Sarah Riordan (Jr.-Appleton/North), who swept her opponent from UW-Superior 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 Gina Dahl (Fr.-Fort Atkinson) finished third by defeating Julie Tellefson from La Crosse. Dahl posted a 7-6 score and then won the tiebreaking set 7-5. Her subsequent 6-2 set then gained her third place.

The Blugolds head to Menomonie for their next event, a dual matchup against UW-Stout this Tuesday.
