WRESTLING ANNOUNCES TEAM AWARD WINNERS

EAU CLAIRE – UW-Eau Claire wrestling coach Don Parker recently announced the team award winners for the 2006-07 season.

The Team Most Valuable Award was presented to Lance Valiquette (Sr.-Auburn, WA). Finishing second at 165 pounds at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships, Valiquette received one of nine at-large bids to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championships hosted by Loras College at Dubuque, Iowa. A team captain, Valiquette completed the 2006-07 season with a 30-13 record. Valiquette’s win total was the most by any Blugold wrestler this season. Valiquette ended his three-year Blugold career with an overall record of 69-44 recording 12 wins by pin. Valiquette was also rewarded for his academic success this season being named to the NCAA Division III All-American Scholar Wrestling Team.

The Most Improved award was given to Andy Miller (So.-Appleton/North). Posting a 7-21 record as a freshman, Miller nearly quadrupled his win total during his sophomore campaign as he ended the season with a 27-12 record and finished second at 133 pounds at the WIAC Championships.

Justin McAuly (Sr.-Clintonville) took team honors for most pins in a season as he end the year with 10. All of McAuly’s pins came as a heavyweight with two of those pins coming in less than two minutes. McAuly ended the year with a 24-13 record finishing third at the WIAC Championships.

Joey Miller (Jr.-Lake Tomahawk/Lakeland Union) and Josh Holforty (So.-Bloomington, MN/Kennedy) were named captains for the 2007-08 season. Miller ended the season with a 23-13 record at 174 pounds. Holforty completed the season with a 17-7 record at 197 pounds. Both wrestlers finished fifth in their respective weight classes at the WIAC Championships.

The Blugolds concluded the season with a 26-20 record including a 12-6 dual meet record. In WIAC dual meets the Blugolds finished 4-2 falling to UW-La Crosse, who finished third at the NCAA Championships, and UW-Steven Point who finished 20th at the national meet.
