WRESTLING GOES 1-3 IN SEASON OPENER AT LAKELAND DUALS
SHEBOYGAN - The UW-Eau Claire wrestling team opened its season today at the six-team Lakeland Duals going 1-3 with its only victory coming against Concordia University. The Blugolds opened up the day going against the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). The Blugolds lost a close contest 16-13. Picking up victories for the Blugolds, all by decision were Dave Vanevenhoven (Sr.-Appleton, WI/Kaukauna) at 157 pounds, Lance Valiquette (Jr.-Auburn, WA) at 165 pounds, Justin Mc Auly (Jr.-Clintonville, WI) at 197 pounds, and Nick Hoeft (So.-Merrill, WI) at heavyweight. Next up the Blugolds went up against Manchester. The Blugolds were defeated 31-21. Vanevenhoven and Valiquette each pinned their opponent for their second win of the day. Jon Erickson (Fr.-Jim Falls, WI/Cornell) pinned his opponent in the first period for his first career win. Mc Auly earned his second win by a 7-3 decision. In the third round of dual matches the Blugolds faced host Lakeland College. The Blugolds ended up losing 27-19 to the Muskies. Getting wins for the Blugolds were Hoeft and Mc Auly, who each pinned their opponents, Tony D'Antuono (Sr.-Waukesha, WI/South) at 149 pounds by a 9-6 decision, and Valiquette won his third match by a 13-2 decision. The Blugolds concluded the day with a 23-19 victory over Concordia University. Valiquette earned his fourth win of the day, pinning his opponent in the first period. David Heser (Fr.-Tomah, WI) at 184 pounds pinned his opponent in the second period for his first career win. Other Blugolds picking up victories were Vanevenhoven, Mc Auly, and Hoeft all by decision. Valiquette and Mc Auly went 4-0 on the day, while Hoeft went 3-0. Vanevenhoven went 3-1 with his only loss coming on a 5-2 decision. Up next the Blugolds will compete in the Concordia Open next Saturday (Nov. 19) in Moorhead, MN. The action gets underway at 9 a.m. - JR -
