BLUGOLD WRESTLERS COMPETE AT MIKE McCREADY OPEN
FAYETTE, IOWA - The UW-Eau Claire wrestling team traveled to Iowa to compete in the Mike McCready open held on the Upper Iowa University campus here tonight at Dorman Gymnasium.
Nick Campbell (Sr.-Eden Prairie, MN/Maple Grove) and Larry Moen (Jr.-Madison/East) each tied for third place at 197 pounds. Campbell pinned Nathan Stauffer in 51 seconds while Moen pinned Tony Stumbo of Northern Iowa in 1:23 advancing both wrestlers to the third-place match.
Derek Sikora (So.-Neillsville) was the top Blugold finisher as he finished fourth at 165 pounds. The sixth-seeded Sikora opened up with a 6-4 upset of third-seeded Jesse Reyerson. Sikora fell in the next round but advanced to the third place match with a 5-0 win over fifth-seeded Matt Perrizo. Sikora lost 6-0 in a rematch against Reyerson to finish fourth.
The Blugolds had four wrestlers take home a sixth-place finish on the day. Dave Vanevenhoven (So.-Kaukauna) took sixth at 149 pounds, Matt Renkas (Jr.-Wabeno) at 157 pounds, Troy Seubert (Sr.-Maple Grove, MN) at 184 pounds and Eric Sommer (Fr.-Neenah) at heavyweight.
Eau Claire will be in action next when they travel to Mt. Vernon, Iowa to compete in the Cornell Invitational Saturday, January 10. The invite is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
