WOMEN’S HOCKEY RALLIES TO EDGE RIVER FALLS 3-2

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Eau Claire women’s hockey team fell behind 2-0 to the UW-River Falls Falcons, but rallied to scored three unanswered goals to wrap up the regular season with a win. Two of the three goals came from freshman sharpshooter Kristin Faber (Fr.-Austin, MN).

The victory capped the Blugolds’ regular season record at 12-13-0 overall and 9-9-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. The 9-9-0 conference record was good enough to land the Blugolds in fourth place at the end of the regular season. The Blugolds finished behind UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior, and UW-River Falls.

In the first period, the two teams fired eight shots on goal apiece, but River Falls went into the locker room with the 1-0 lead after a late goal at 19:42. The Falcon goal came from Jamie Briski and was set up by teammate Jessie Dyslin.

In the second period, the Falcons added to their 1-0 lead when Abby Sunderman lit the lamp at the 3:36 mark. Down 2-0, the Blugolds scored a goal of their own two minutes and 46 second later when Faber teamed up with Beth Dittrich (So.-Roseville, MN) and Christine Dickinson (Fr.-Layton, UT/Shattuck St. Mary's). That was all the scoring of the second period as the Blugolds headed into the locker room down 2-1.

In the third period, Faber tied the game up at 4:25. The goal was Faber’s second of the game and 13th of the season. With the game tied at two, Dickinson scored the game winning goal at 10:06 of the third. Up 3-2, the Blugolds went on to protect the lead and close out the regular season with a victory.

Danika Porter (Fr.-Rosemount, MN/South St. Paul) started in goal for the Blugolds. In her first appearance in five games, Porter stopped 20 of the 22 shots she faced and recorded a win to lift her record to 7-6-0.

For River Falls, Cassi Campbell fell to 14-8-2 in net as a result of the season finale defeat. Campbell stopped 32 of the 35 shots she faced.

The Blugolds will start post season play next weekend when they travel to Superior, Wisconsin to play Lake Forest College in the first round of the NCHA playoffs. The Blugolds won the season series against Lake College this year by winning two of the three matchups.
