WOMEN’S HOCKEY BLANKS FINLANDIA

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Eau Claire women’s hockey team shutout Finlandia University 2-0 on Saturday night at Hobbs Ice Center. The victory completed the Blugolds’ series sweep as well as their season sweep over the Lions.

The first period started off slowly for both teams. Neither team could find the net, but that changed at 16:20 of the period. At that time, the Blugolds’ Beth Dittrich (So.-Roseville, MN) beat Lions’ goalie Corinne Czekaj on a shallow angle shot from the left corner to give the Blugolds the 1-0 lead. Dittrich’s goal was assisted by Lauren Havard (Jr.-San Angelo, TX/Arapahoe). The Blugolds protected that lead for the remainder of the period and went into the first intermission having outshot the Lions 10-3.

In the second, the teams played each other to a standoff as neither team recorded a goal. The Blugolds controlled play in the Lions zone for parts of the period, and they outshot the Lions 9-5.

The Blugolds continued to control the pace of the game in the third period, and at 6:42 Margaret Campbell (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) setup Christine Knop (Fr.-Coon Rapids, MN) who beat Czekaj with a slap shot from the left circle to put the Blugolds up 2-0. The goal was Knops first of the year. Knop’s goal would be all the Blugolds needed as they held Finlandia scoreless the rest of the way and came away with their second consecutive victory.

In net, Danika Porter (Fr.-Rosemount, MN/South St. Paul) stopped all 14 shots she faced and improved her record to 6-6. The shutout was Porters third of the season.

With the win, the Blugolds are now 10-8 overall and 7-4 against Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) foes. This win also puts the Blugolds in sole possession of third place in the NCHA standings. They trail only UW-Stevens Point and UW- Superior.

The Blugolds will have a chance to pick up some ground in the standings when they host Stevens Point next Friday. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:00 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Center.
