WOMEN'S HOCKEY SUFFERS FIRST LOSS

WINONA, MN - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team lost 5-1 to Saint Mary's tonight at the SMU Ice Arena, despite more than doubling the opponents in shots on goal.

The first period remained very quiet. Eau Claire managed nine shots on goal compared to the three of Saint Mary's. Eau Claire did have three power play opportunities in the period.

At 3:36 into the second, the Cardinals got on the board with a power play goal. In the same period the Blugolds responded by cashing in their only goal of the night at 11:07. The Cardinal scoring avalanche then ensued. Late in the second and within thirty seconds of each other, the Cardinals put up two goals to go up 3-1. They were both even-handed. They came at 18:20 and 18:49.

Saint Mary's scored two more goals in third. The first was an even-sided one at 6:46 while the other was on a power play at 17:48. Eau Claire had four power play advantages and 20 shots on goal in the final period, but failed to record a goal.
