WOMEN'S HOCKEY OPENS UP SEASON 1-0

FRIDLEY, MN - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team began the 2005-06 season with a 2-1 victory today over Bethel University at Columbia Arena.

The Royals got on the board first, though, with an even-handed goal 9:08 into the game. It was scored by Heidi Govednik. Eau Claire actually outshot the home team 8-5 in the period, but came up empty.

The Blugolds started coming alive in the second period. Lauren Havard (Fr.-San Angelo, TX/Arapahoe) scored the first goal of the season 1:25 in the period. There were no assists on this power play goal. At the other end of the period, Amanda Shultz (Sr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) scored an even-sided goal 16:46 in with assists coming from Martina Korinek (Jr.-White Bear Lake, MN) and Crystal Wasem Sr.-Chaska, MN). Eau Claire actually matched Bethel's final for shots on goal in that one period with 15.

Both squads were then held scoreless for the rest of the matchup, though Bethel did have its most shots in the final period with eight. The Royals also had two power play chances that period, as well.

Goalie Jill Arendt (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) was credited with 14 saves on the night. Bethel only managed the 15 shots on goal while Eau Claire posted a 26 total. Both teams had five power play chances, with Eau Claire the only one converting on the first goal of the second period.

The team plays tomorrow in Winona, MN against Saint Mary's. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m.
