WOMEN’S GOLF PREPARED FOR ONLY AWAY MEET OF SPRING SEASON

EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Eau Claire women’s golf team will play its first meet of the spring and its only road meet of the spring when it participates in the Illinois Wesleyan University (IL) Spring Fling this Saturday and Sunday in Bloomington, IL.

The seventh-ranked Blugolds had their other away meet cancelled due to weather this past Friday and Saturday at Waverly, IA. The only other spring meet is the Blugold Spring Invitational on April 28-29. After that only nationals are left.

The team had a very successful fall season that culminated in a third consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship. It also secured a spot in nationals for the seventh straight year.

The team also claimed first at the UW-Stevens Point Invite, which had eight schools. The Blugolds finished runner-up at the 20-team UW-Eau Claire Invite and, after being in sixth the first day, the 25-team Illinois Wesleyan Invite. Eau Claire also tied for third out of 16 at the Wartburg Invitational and took fourth of 15 at the Division III Midwest Classic. The Midwest Classic and the Wartburg Invitational were shortened to one-day, 18-hole events due to weather.

Torie Ives (Fr.-Osseo/Osseo-Fairchild) was the individual champion at the WIAC Championships after winning a sudden death playoff. The last time a Blugold did not win the individual crown was in 2002. Ives also tied for first at the UW-Stevens Point Invite with teammate Jesse Thompson (Sr.-Stevens Point/SPASH). Ives, who also tied for third at the Illinois Wesleyan Invite, averaged 82.2 on the season. Thompson shot 80.8, second-best on the squad. Thompson finished in the top 10 for every meet but the first one. Other than her first-place tie, she grabbed fourth at the conference championships, tied for seventh at the Division III Midwest Classic, tied for eighth at the Illinois Wesleyan Invite, and tied for ninth at the Wartburg Invitational.

The best average belonged to Meghan Sobotta (Jr.-Arcadia) with an 80.5. Sobotta tied for first in the opening UW-Eau Claire Invite. She tied for third at the UW-Stevens Point Invite, grabbed fifth at the WIAC Championships, and tied for eighth at the Illinois Wesleyan Invite.

Kate Borman (Fr.-Kenosha/Bradford) and her 84 average were fourth-best for the Blugolds. Eau Claire’s other main golfer was Kim Huber, but she graduated in December.

Last year the Blugolds took fourth out of 18 schools at the Spring Fling. They shot a collective 662 while DePauw University (IN) won it with a 634 score. Sobotta claimed a +14 third place.

The meet will begin on Saturday and conclude on Sunday.
