VOLLEYBALL VICTORY CLINCHES WIAC TITLE

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team earned a share of the WIAC championship tonight with a win over UW-Superior in three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-14.

UW-Oshkosh shares the title with Eau Claire, defeating UW-Platteville tonight in four sets.

This is the Blugolds' second conference co-championship in the last three seasons, with their last coming in 2006. This is the first championship under second-year head coach Kim Wudi. Last season the Blugolds tied Oshkosh for second in the WIAC.

The Blugolds improve to 7-1 in conference play, and 15-10 overall. Superior drops to 2-5 in the conference and 11-15 on the season.

Eau Claire dominated each statistical category, including kills, assists, service aces and blocks. Abby Freiborg (Sr.-Sacred Heart, Minn.) continued her consistent play, leading the team with 10 kills and 22 digs. Danielle Lucia (So.-St. Cloud, Minn/Apollo) also collected 10 kills to go along with four block assists. Emily Haese (Sr.-Mishicot, Wis.) led the offensive attack with 40 assists, while Lindsey Smith (Jr.-Maple Lake, Minn) was solid as usual on defense with 11 digs.

Jess Ebel led the Yellowjackets with 12 kills and Audra Stevenson recorded 13 digs.

The Blugolds continue their road trip on Friday and Saturday when they travel to the UW-Whitewater Tournament for two matches on each day. Friday's matches pit Eau Claire against Illinois Wesleyan at 1 p.m., and Grandview (Iowa) at 5 p.m. Saturday the Blugolds face Wartburg (Iowa) at 9 a.m. and Coe (Iowa) at 1 p.m.
