ILLINOIS WESLEYAN CAPITALIZES ON ERRORS TO SEND RIPON PACKING

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Opening the second day of the NCAA Division III Softball Regional Championship in Eau Claire, Illinois Wesleyan University defeated Ripon College 3-0 at Gelein Field today.

Illinois Wesleyan, ranked 23rd in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 poll, improves to 30-10 on the season, while Ripon College ended its season with a mark of 20-14.

The Illinois Wesleyan Titans got on the board early in the game, getting the scoring started on an error by the pitcher. After a wild pitch, the Titans’ Monica Urban scored a run to get her team on the board. Valerie Hackett then came up two batters later and hit a sacrifice fly to allow the Titans’ to score again. The inning ended with two runs scored and three errors committed by the Ripon College Red Hawks. An inning later an Urban single to center field drove in another Titan run to put them up 3-0.

On the day, no one had more than one hit for either team. Four players each came up with a single hit for the Titans, while two Red Hawk batters each produced hits.

Christy Engel picked up the win for Illinois Wesleyan to improve her record to 18-5. She faced 22 batters, striking out five and allowing two hits in seven innings of play. Ripon’s Brittnee Peotter was given the loss to drop her record to 7-4. Peotter allowed four hits and struck out three, facing 20 batters. She also committed two errors in the game.

Illinois Wesleyan will now face the loser of the UW-Eau Claire vs. UW-Oshkosh game which is scheduled to be played at 6 p.m. Friday. The Titans will face the loser at 2 p.m. Saturday.
