Game Eight - #2 Stevens Point vs. #3 River Falls
RIVER FALLS SCORES BIG IN EXTRA INNINGS
EAU CLAIRE – UW-River Falls won its second extra-inning game of the day, scoring six times in the ninth to beat nationally-ranked UW-Stevens Point, 11-7, in one semifinal game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference fastpitch tournament at Hobbs Field in Carson Park Friday night.
River Falls, the No. 3 seed in the double elimination tournament, needed two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score and extend the game. In the ninth, the Falcons exploded for six runs on seven hits.
River Falls collected a tournament-high 19 hits in the contest with only one going for extra bases, that being a double by Mindy Rudiger. Rudiger and Emily Howlett each rapped four hits while Ashley James singled three times for the Falcons.
Stevens Point had a respectable 11 hits on the contest including home runs by Korryn Brooks, Stephanie Anderson and and Melissa Boldt.
The win propelled River Falls to a 32-10 record on the season while Point, which is ranked No. 17 in the most recent NFCA Division III poll, lost for only the seventh time this season in 38 starts.
Stevens Point will be forced to come through the losers’ bracket Saturday, starting with a 9 a.m. contest against UW-Whitewater, the tournament’s fifth seed. River Falls will face the winner of the UW-Eau Claire vs. UW-Oshkosh semifinal game.
