Game Seven - #5 Whitewater vs. #9 Platteville
WHITEWATER STAYS ALIVE WITH ONE-RUN WIN
EAU CLAIRE – UW-Whitewater built a 7-2 lead, then held off UW-Platteville to escape with a 7-6 triumph and stay alive in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s double elimination fastpitch tournament at Gelein Field in Carson Park Friday afternoon.
The win moved Whitewater into a 9 a.m. Saturday matchup against the loser of the semifinal contest between UW-Stevens Point and UW-River Falls.
The teams traded home runs in the first inning as Tera Burr led off the game with a roundtripper for Platteville and Amy Gahl answered with a solo shot in the bottom of the frame for Whitewater.
The Warhawks, now 24-14 on the year, used a five-hit attack in the second to build a 5-1 lead. A double by Ashley Smith plated two of the runs in the inning.
A two-run blast by Maggie Digman highlighted a four-run fifth by Platteville that brought the Pioneers within one but they stranded two on the bases that inning. Platteville also left two on in the sixth and had a runner on base when a line double play ended the game.
Platteville outhit Whitewater, 14-12, with Becky Swanson and Dru Schneider getting three apiece. Platteville finished the season with an 11-28 record.
