Game Three - #2 Stevens Point vs. #7 La Crosse
POINTER POWER PRODUCES FIRST ROUND WIN
EAU CLAIRE – Second-seeded UW-Stevens Point used a school record four home run barrage to defeat UW-La Crosse, 9-1, in the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference fastpitch tournament at Gelein Field in Carson Park here Friday morning.
The win vaulted the Pointers into the semifinals of the double elimination tournament against UW-River Falls at 4 p.m. Friday while seventh-seeded La Crosse will meet sixth-seeded UW-Superior in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. Friday. River Falls beat Superior, 4-3, in nine innings in another quarterfinal game.
Point, ranked No. 17 in the most recent NFCA Division III poll, is now 31-6 for the season while La Crosse fell to 12-25 for the season.
Coach Ann Munzenmaier’s Pointers got solo roundtrippers from Korryn Brooks in the first, Jackie Berger in the third and Stephanie Anderson in the fourth plus a two-run shot from Laura Van Abel in the fifth. The quadruple dingers gave the Pointers a new school season home run record with 22.
The Pointers scored three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings, getting four hits in the fourth and three in the fifth to finish with 12 for the game. The game ended on the 8-run rule when Melissa Boldt lined a shot down the left field line to plate pinch-runner Nikki Schomer.
La Crosse managed eight hits against the Pointers’ ace Stephanie Anderson but stranded seven on the bases. Anderson did not walk a batter and struck out four. An infield groundout by pinchhitter Emily Eggers drove in Jenny Miller who had doubled leading off the fifth and allowed the Eagles to avoid a shutout.
