Game Two - #3 River Falls vs. #6 Superior
RIVER FALLS NEEDS NINE INNINGS TO DOWN SUPERIOR
EAU CLAIRE – UW-River Falls scored on infield hit in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat UW-Superior, 4-3, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference fastpitch quarterfinal game at Hobbs Field in Carson Park Friday.
The win moved third-seeded River Falls into the semifinals of the double elimination tournament against UW-Stevens Point at 4 p.m. Friday while sixth-seeded Superior will meet UW-La Crosse in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Stevens Point advanced with a 9-1 win over La Crosse.
River Falls’ winning run was set up when Brittany Rathbun reached second on a two-base outfield error to start the ninth. With one out, Mindy Rudiger walked and Breamber Syverson followed with a single to load the bases. Emily Howlett’s hit to short allowed Rathbun to score the gamewinner.
River Falls also scored an unearned run in the first inning. Rathbun’s sacrifice fly in the second gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead. But Superior battled back with one in the fourth on Jamie Lovstad’s home run and tied the game on a based-loaded illegal pitch in the sixth.
Rebecca Troop’s two-out single in the bottom of the sixth put the Falcons back up 3-2 but Superior forced the extra innings when Jodi Redlich singled with two out in the seventh to plate a runner who had reached base on an error after striking out. River Falls rapped 11 hits and was issued three bases on balls. Superior managed nine hits and benefited from six walks but stranded 13 runners on base.
