Game Ten - #2 Stevens Point vs. #5 Whitewater


10-RUN INNING PROPELS STEVENS POINT

EAU CLAIRE – UW-Stevens Point scored 10 runs in the third inning and went on to a 12-7 triumph over UW-Whitewater in a losers’ bracket game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference fastpitch softball tournament at Hobbs Field in Carson Park Saturday morning.

The victory allowed Stevens Point, the tournament’s No. 2 seed and ranked No. 17 nationally in the NFCA Division III poll, to advance to a showdown with top-seeded UW-Oshkosh in the double elimination tournament. Both teams were bounced into the losers’ bracket in nine-inning losses Friday night. Oshkosh advanced Saturday morning with a 4-0 win over UW-Superior.

Stevens Point sent 14 players to the plate and banged out 10 hits in its 10-run third. The big hits were a two-run single by Jackie Berger and a two-run double by Chelsea McIlquham.

Whitewater matched Stevens Point in hits for the game with 13 but the Warhawks stranded 11 runners on the bases. After falling behind 10-2 after three, Whitewater battled back to within 10-6 with two each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Point’s Korryn Brooks opened the sixth with a solo home run, her third roundtrippper of the tournament.

Stevens Point improved to 32-7 on the season while Whitewater, which was eliminated from the tournament, finished the season with a 24-15 mark. The Warhawks’ Kyley Shramek matched a tournament high with four hits and also drove in four runs for the game.
