Game One - #8 Stout vs. #9 Platteville
PLATTEVILLE ELIMINATES STOUT IN WIAC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT
EAU CLAIRE – UW-Platteville took advantage of four UW-Stout errors to score two unearned runs and post a 3-1 triumph in the opening game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Softball Tournament at Gelein Field in Carson Park here Friday morning.
The loss eliminated Stout after one game for the second consecutive year. The Blue Devils were the No. 8 seed and faced No. 9 seed Platteville in a play-in game for the double elimination conference tournament.
Last year, Stout was eliminated by UW-River Falls in the play-in game.
Platteville scored twice in the third inning and added an insurance run in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded Lindsay Weigand hit a ground ball to the second baseman, who then went home with throw, but the ball sailed over the catchers head to allow two Pioneer runs to score.
With the score 3-1 Platteville, Stout would load the bases, but with two outs Pioneer pitcher Maggie Medlicott induced a groundout to end the game. Medlicott (7-12) struck out five and scattered seven hits as she went the distance to get the win.
Platteville advances to the quarterfinals where the Pioneers will face top-seeded UW-Oshkosh at 1 p.m. Friday.
