BLUGOLDS CLIMB TO NO. 6; LUTHER GAMES CANCELLED
The UW-Eau Claire softball team has climbed to the No. 6 position in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III poll. The Blugolds have steadily climbed from No. 16 in the preseason poll to this week's lofty ranking behind St. Thomas, Ithaca, Muskingum, Rutgers-Camden and Louisiana College. They were tied for No. 8 in the previous poll and were No. 9 in the first regular season poll. There are two polls remaining on May 10 and May 31. The Blugolds, who have won 22 of their last 23 games, are now 28-4 for the season. Two of their losses were to top-ranked St. Thomas and another to 23rd-ranked College of St. Scholastica. The Blugolds were scheduled to face Luther College in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday in Decorah, Iowa. But fifth-year Blugold head coach Leslie Huntington has announced that the games have been cancelled because Luther is backed up on makeup games in the Iowa Conference. The Blugolds' next competition will be Saturday when they host UW-Oshkosh in a 12 noon doubleheader at Gelein Field in Carson Park. The Blugolds are 12-0 in the WIAC while Oshkosh is 9-1 with a twin bill set today against UW-Stevens Point at home. The Blugolds have won 15 consecutive regular season conference games over the past two seasons. They are bidding to become the first team in conference history to win three consecutive regular season championships. Following the conference matchup with Oshkosh, the Blugolds will host St. Mary's University in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday at Gelein Field. Monday, the Blugolds will travel to Superior to wrap up regular season conference play with a makeup twin bill against UW-Superior. The WIAC tournament will take place May 5-6 in Menomonie.
