SOCCER TO HOST UW-PLATTEVILLE IN WIAC QUARTERFINAL
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The 2007-08 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) champion Eau Claire Blugolds will play host to eight seed UW-Platteville on Tuesday at the Bollinger Fields for the WIAC Tournament Quarterfinal match. Eau Claire, 7-0-1 in the WIAC and 15-1-2 overall, have not lost in 25 straight conference games. The Blugolds are two-time defending WIAC champions. The last time UW-Eau Claire lost against a conference opponent was October 16, 2004, when Stevens Point defeated the Blugolds 3-0. Including playoff games against conference opponents, the Blugolds have not lost in 30 consecutive games. Eau Claire shut out Platteville on Oct. 20, 2007 when the Blugolds won 7-0 at the Bollinger Fields. UW-Platteville, 1-5-1 in the WIAC and 3-12-5 overall, are 0-19 all-time against Eau Claire. Leading the offensive attack for the Blugolds is Amy Smith (Jr.- Bloomington, MN/Thomas Jefferson) who has 13 goals and nine assists. Liz Kooistra (Jr.- Lakeville, MN) has eight goals and six assists while Gina Christenbury (Fr.- Pleasant Prairie, WI/Kenosha Tremper) and Haelee Maurer (Fr.- Appleton, WI/West) each have five goals for Eau Claire. Logging the majority of the minutes in the net for the Blugolds is goalie Allie Rivard (Jr.- Plymouth, MN/Wayzata). Rivard is 7-1-2 for the Blugolds and has played 1069:54 for Eau Claire. Rivard has 30 saves and has allowed four goals. Rivard also has four shut-outs for the team. Liz Weirick (Sr.- Kenosha, WI/Tremper) has logged 597:19 minutes for the Blugolds with one shut-out. Weirick is 8-0-0 with 10 saves and five allowed goals. The Blugolds have out-scored its opponents this season 51-9, with 22 goals coming in the first half and 28 coming in the second with one overtime goal. Eau Claire has also out-shot its opponents 332-96 this season, with 164 coming in the first half and 160 in the second with eight overtime shots. The Blugolds have been knocked out of the play-offs the last two seasons by Wheaton College (IL). Wheaton beat Eau Claire in overtime during the 2005-06 season by a score of 2-1 and in the 2006-07 season by a score of 2-0. Wheaton beat the Blugolds earlier this season when they scored the go-ahead goal with 18 seconds remaining in the game and won 2-1. The winner of Tuesday’s game between Eau Claire and Platteville will take on the winner of UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse game. The semifinals will take place on Friday, Nov. 2 at the home of the highest seed at 11 a.m. The Blugolds will host UW-Platteville on Tuesday at the Bollinger Fields in Eau Claire. The game is set to start at 2 p.m. Tickets for Tuesday’s contest can be purchased at the field; the cost will be $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for youths, and free for all WIAC students with ID. - KD -
