CARTHAGE FALLS TO CINDERELLA WARTBURG IN NCAA REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – A day after the Wartburg women’s soccer team knocked off the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds 2-1 in first round action of the NCAA Division III Tournament, they took down Carthage College with an overtime goal for the go ahead 2-1 victory.

The Lady Red’s of Carthage jumped on the board first and took a 1-0 lead at the 22:13 mark.  Keeley Monckton scored her first goal of the NCAA playoffs and fifth goal of the season.  Debbie Kozlowski had the assist on the goal.

The Knights would answer quickly with a goal from Jamie Frederick at the 25:58 mark. Frederick scored her seventh goal of the season after Rachel Oswald sent her a pass up the middle and that gave Frederick the breakaway opportunity for the goal.

The game was all tied up at the half.  Carthage had the one shot advantage with six to Wartburg’s five.  The Lady Red’s defense held the Knights to zero corner kicks and the Carthage offense had four corner kicks.

The match would stay scoreless through the second period to force and extra ten minutes of play.  Each team had five shots on goal in the second period.  Carthage had one corner kick and the defense of Carthage held the Knights to zero corner kicks during regulation time.

After a five minute break the clock started with ten minutes for a sudden death overtime.  With 2:27 remaining in the first overtime Logan Webb scored her first goal of the season for the Knights to bring home the victory and send them to the NCAA Division III Semifinals next weekend.  Webb scored her first goal of the year off a corner kick from Lauren Thomas who had the assist on the goal.

Wartburg started Rachel Coleman in the net she had two saves and allowed one goal.  Christina Ernst took over in the net in the second half and had three saves for the Knights and allowed zero goals for the win.  Carthage goalie Lindsey Bollman had three saves and allowed two goals in the game.

In the end, Wartburg out-shot Carthage 12 to 11. Carthage had seven corner kicks to Wartburg’s two.  Wartburg had 10 fouls to Carthage’s seven.  One yellow card was given in the match to Wartburg coach Jim Conlon.

Wartburg moves to 18-3-1 and Carthage College ended its season today with a record of 16-5-1.  Wartburg advances to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and will await word on the opponent and site of the semifinals.
