LA CROSSE REPEATS AS WIAC WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPION
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse women’s track and field team took first place honors at the 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Simpson Field today, winning the conference crown for the second year straight.
La Crosse scored 192, leading the nine-team field by 33.5 points. Eau Claire came in second, scoring 158.5 points, while Oshkosh scored 140.5 for a third place spot. River Falls finished the meet in fourth with 118, and Stevens Point scored 77 for fifth place. In sixth came Stout with 51, while Platteville had 50 for a seventh place finish. Whitewater ended the meet in eighth with 46 points and Superior came in last with 24.
River Falls’ Becca Jordahl was named Track Athlete of the Meet, while Vicki Cooper, also over River Falls claimed Field Athlete of the Meet honors. Terry Schwamb of Oshkosh and Jenny Rogers of Whitewater were named WIAC Judy Kruckman Co-Scholar-Athletes.
Taking the top spot in the high jump was Stout’s Sam Mayer with a leap of 5-03 ¼. Eau Claire did well in the event, taking the next two spots. Bridget Wolfe placed second with a height also of 5-03 ¼, while Alicia Schuelke tied for third with a jump of 5-01 ¼. Oshkosh’s Ellen Buchanan and Shaparis Wyatt also tied for third with the same height.
In the discus throw, River Falls’ Krista Hasselquist was the event champion with an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying distance of 154-06, also the second farthest throw in the WIAC this season. Sam Mayer of Stout threw a distance of 148-04, an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying throw. River Falls’ Vicki Cooper also picked up a provisional qualifying distance of 145-05 for a third place finish.
The shot put was dominated by River Falls’ today, taking first, second and third. Vicki Cooper took the top spot with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying throw of 44-11 ¾. In second was Kim Altenhofen with a provisional qualifying distance of 44-0 ¾. Krista Hasselquist finished in third with a throw of 41-11 ½.
La Crosse runners took the top spot in the 4x100-meter relay with a provisional qualifying time of 47.92, which came up sixth-tenths of the second short of a facility record. Stevens Point finished second in the event with a finish of 48.78, while Eau Claire’s relay team came in a close third with a time of 48.80.
In the 1,500-meter run, Platteville’s Marcia Taddy took first with a time of 4:38.25. Ayla Mitchell of Oshkosh finished second with a time of 4:42.33, while Eau Claire’s Hannah Humbach completed the race with a time of 4:42.66 for a third place finish. All three finishes were provisional qualifying times.
In the 400-meter dash, Eau Claire’s Liz Kooistra finished first with a time of 57.11. Stevens Point’s Kathleen Folbrecht took second with a time of 59.16, while La Crosse’s Danica Schaefer finished right behind her with a run of 59:22.
The 100-meter hurdles were led by Eau Claire’s Liz Faller, with a time of 14.59. La Crosse’s Chris Clausen finished second with a run of 15 seconds and Andrea Fabiano of Oshkosh took second with a time of 15.22. All three were NCAA Division III provisional qualifying times.
Marcia Taddy of UW-Platteville won the 800-meter run with a provisional qualifying time of 2:12.86. Stevens Point’s Angie Steffens finished in second with a time of 2:15.26 and Oshkosh Ayla Mitchell took third with a finish of 2:17.68.
La Crosse’s Abby Lien won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.13, an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. Liz Faller of Eau Claire took second with a time of 1:04.49 while River Falls’ Shannon Zwiefel finished in third with a time of 1:04.65.
Picking up provisional qualifying times in the 200-meter dash were Whitewater’s Brooke Bell and Stevens Point’s Liz Caine. Bell won the race with a time of 25.12, while Caine finished right behind her with a time of 25.16. La Crosse’s Sarah Duchow took third with a time of 25.36.
In the 5,000-meter run, River Falls’ Becca Jordahl was crowned the champion with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time and facility record of 17:01.58. The next closest finisher, Jessica Scott of Platteville, completed the race with a time of 18:01.19. Eau Claire’s Mary Palmer finished in third with a time of 18:06.16.
In the 4x400 relay, La Crosse took home the first place finish with a time of 3:54.35, an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. Stevens Point finished in second, completing the relay in 3:54.90, also a provisional qualifying time. Eau Claire finished with a time of 4:02.41 to take third in the event.
The triple jump was led by Stout’s Ashlea Peter. She finished with a facility record and provisional qualifying leap of 39-0 ¼. La Crosse’s Caitlin Schetter and Ann Marie Glejf also picked up provisional qualifying jumps, taking second and third with distance of 38-07 and 37-05 ¼, respectively.
In the heptathlon, La Crosse’s Ann Marie Glejf won first with 4,225 points. Brittany Smith of River Falls finished in second place with 4,223 points, while Eau Claire’s Bridget Wolfe took third place with 4,193 points. All three scores were NCAA Division III provisional qualifying times.
