MEN'S TRACK TAKES SECOND AT NORSE RELAYS

DECORAH, Iowa - Eric Johnson (So.-Schofield/D.C. Everest) won the long jump and the triple jump competitions in his first ever collegiate meet en route to a second place finish by the UW-Eau Claire men's track and field team at the 2004 Norse Relays hosted by Luther College.

The meet was the first outdoor meet of the season for the Blugolds. UW-La Crosse edged out Eau Claire for first place, scoring 128 points to the Blugolds' 127. Luther finished in third place out of 10 teams with 120 points.

Johnson won the long jump with a distance of 22-1 ½ (6.74 meters) and the triple jump with a distance of 43-6 (13.26m), topping teammate Eric Eigenfeld (Fr.-DeForest) by one inch for first place in the triple jump.

John Schuna (Jr.-Hudson) also took first place in two events, claiming the shot put competition with a throw of 53-11 (16.43m) and the discuss competition with a throw of 160-11 (49.06m). Both distances are NCAA provisional qualifying marks for national competition.

Eau Claire had two relay teams cross the finish line before anybody else as the Blugolds won the distance medley relay event with a time of 10:44.32 and the 1,600 meter medley with a time of 3:38.31.

Chris King (Jr.-Chippewa Falls) took second place in both the discuss and the hammer throw. He posted a throw of 150-9 (45.95m) in the discuss, falling to only Schuna, while taking second in the hammer throw with a toss of 163-1 (49.71m).

Ethan Kreul (Jr.-Poynette) earned second place in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 32:55.47 while Adam Condit (Jr.-La Crosse/Central) took second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:18.35.

The Blugolds will next be in action on Friday when they participate in the Phil Esten Invite hosted by La Crosse.
