WOMEN FIRST, MEN THIRD AT UW-STOUT OPEN

MENOMONIE - The UW-Eau Claire women's indoor track and field team took first place out of eight teams while the men's team finished in third place out of eight teams here today at the UW-Stout Open.

The women Blugolds earned the first place finish with a score of 171.33, blowing away the competition as Stout finished in a distant second with a score of 127.83. UW-Whitewater finished a close third with a score of 123.50 while Augsburg rounded out the top four with a score of 69.

Current Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference athlete of the week Jen Stafslien (Jr.-Onalaska/West Salem) led the way for Eau Claire, claiming three first place finishes and a third place finish. Stafslien won the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.68 seconds, the long jump with a distance of 5.25 meters, and the triple jump with a jump of 11.19 meters. Her distance in the triple jump provisionally qualifies her for national competition. Stafslien also claimed third place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.68.

Erin Kokta (Jr.-Brookfield/East) was right behind Stafslien in both the long jump and the second jump, claiming second in each event while also taking second in the high jump with a jump of 1.53 meters.

The Blugolds looked impressive in each the 400-meter dash and the pole vault competitions as Eau Claire took the top two places in the 400-meter dash and first, third, and fourth place in the pole vault. Kallie Krueger (Sr.-Fall Creek) earned the first place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.40 while Kristi Hansen (Jr.-Rosemount, MN) took second place, finishing in a time of 1:02.45. Betsy Kaminski (Fr.-Waupaca) took the top spot in the pole vault competition with a mark of 3.22 meters. The distance provisionally qualifies her for national competition. Chelsea Romportl (Fr.-Rice Lake) took third in the event while Jenna Mastalir (Fr.-Missoula, MT) claimed fourth.

On the men's side, UW-Whitewater won the event by a landslide, taking first place with a score of 272 while UW-Stout took second with 120 and the Blugolds followed with 110.

John Schuna (Jr.-Hudson) and Adam Condit (Jr.-La Crosse/Central) were the only Blugolds to take first place in an event. Schuna earned first place honors in the shot put competition, winning by more than 1.5 meters with a throw of 16.60 meters, which provisionally qualifies him for nationals. Condit earned the first place in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:50.47 while Ben Schmiege (Sr.-Madison/Lakeside Lutheran) earned second place in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:05.10.

Erik Ferguson (Jr.-Rochester, MN/Dover-Eyota) took second place in the 200-meter dash, finishing in a time of 22.86 while also earning fourth place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.64.

Both teams return to Menomonie next Saturday for the Warren Bowlus Invite at Noon.
