MEN FIRST, WOMEN SECOND AT BLUGOLD INVITATIONAL

EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire men's gold track and field team took first place while the women's track team finished second at the Blugold Indoor Invitational held here today at the McPhee Phy. Ed. Center.

The men's teams finished first in eight events with the Blue and Gold teams splitting the relays. Adam Sturgis (Fr.-Bruce) took first in the 200-meter dash with Adam Koger (Fr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) following up with a first place finish in the 400-meter run.

Ethan Kreul (Jr.-Poynette) took first in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:20.99 while Nick Aliota (Fr.-Brookfield/Central) finished first in the 55-meter hurdles to round out the track events.

The Blugolds dominated the throwing events with John Schuna (Jr.-Hudson) taking first in the shot put and Chris King (Jr.-Chippewa Falls) finishing first in the weight throw.

The women's team took first place in five events with the distance runners leading the way. Melissa Wright (Sr.-Appleton/Kimberly) took first in the 3,000-meter run while Heidi Hancock (Jr.-Greendale) took first in the 5,000-meter run.

Jennifer Stafslien (Jr.-Onalaska/West Salem) started off the year on the right foot winning the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.69 while Chelsea Romportl (Fr.-Rice Lake) took first in the pole vault. The 4 x 400-meter relay team finished first to round out the winners.

Both teams will be in action next when they travel to Menomonie Saturday, January 31 to compete in the UW-Stout Open. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
