DAY ONE OF WIAC CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE BOOKS
EAU CLAIRE - The first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships wrapped up at Simpson Field with UW-Oshkosh holding a one-point lead over UW-La Crosse on the women's side and the Eagle men holding a lead over the Whitewater men.
The women Titans scored 64 points in the opening day of the event with the Eagles finishing with 63. UW-Stevens point sits in third place with one day remaining while UW-Eau Claire rounds out the top four teams.
Julia Rudd of La Crosse set a new conference and Simpson Field record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:40.57. The time is an automatic qualification for national competition. Melissa Wright (Eau Claire), Ashleigh Potuznik (Stevens Point) and Katie Isermann (Oshkosh) all provisionally qualified for nationals in the event.
La Crosse's Angela Hilgers also set conference and Simpson Field records, breaking both in the pole vault competition while repeating as conference champ in the event. Her height of 3.77 meters (12-4 ½) is an automatic qualification to nationals while five other competitors all provisionally qualified.
Robyn Jarocki of Oshkosh destroyed the automatic qualification mark in the hammer throw, setting a new conference and Simpson Field record with a distance of 56.04 meters (183-10). Titan Penny Godleske took second with a throw of 52.54 meters (172-4), also an automatic qualification. Eight other throwers qualified provisionally for nationals in the hammer throw.
Ashley Nelson of Eau Claire set a Simpson Field record in the long jump, automatically qualifying for nationals with a jump of 5.82 meters (19-1 ¼). She was just 1 ¾ inches away from a new conference record. Blugolds Erin Kokta and Jen Stafslien finished behind Nelson to give Eau Claire the top three jumps in the long jump competition.
UW-La Crosse leads after the first day of competition with a score of 80.50. The Warhawks sit in second place with 60 points while UW-Stevens Point is in third with 44. UW-Platteville rounds out the top four teams with 25 points on the day.
Jeremy Wendt of UW-Whitewater shattered his own conference record in the hammer throw with an Olympic Trials qualifying throw of 66.48 meters (218-1). The mark is an automatic qualification to nationals as well as a Simpson Field record. La Crosse's Kevin Becker and Phil Whitesitt also automatically qualified for nationals in the event.
UW-Stevens Point's Matt Legel set a Simpson Field record in the 800-meter dash. He did so in the prelims of the competition with a time of 1:51.67.
Mark LaLonde automatically qualified for national competition with a win in the 10,000-meter run. He finished in a time of 30:20.44.
The UW-Oshkosh men's 4x800 meter relay team set a new Simpson Field record with a time of 7:46.58.
