MEN’S TENNIS ENDS SEASON WITH WIAC DUALS
EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Eau Claire men’s tennis team concludes the 2006-07 this Friday and Saturday with dual matches against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foes UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater at the Simpson Tennis Courts. The Blugolds will face La Crosse on Friday at 2:00 PM. Eau Claire will begin play on Saturday against Oshkosh at 9:00 AM followed by Whitewater at 1:00 PM. The Blugolds enter the weekend with a dual meet record of 11-7. Since starting the season 0-3 Eau Claire has won 11 of their last 15 dual meets including six in a row against NCAA Division III opponents. Brett Gressick (Jr.-De Pere) sports the best singles record on the team at 19-4. Gressick is 7-0 at No. 1 singles and 8-3 at the No. 5 flight this season. Erik Brandner (Jr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) is 13-7 for the season including a 12-4 mark at No. 4 singles. Steve Lantz (So.-Rochester, MN/Century) is 9-8 at No. 2 singles with an overall record of 12-10. Aaron Nordenskjold (Sr.-Red Wing, MN) enters his final weekend of competition as a Blugold with an overall record of 11-6. Nordenskjold is 11-5 this season at No. 3 singles. In doubles play, the tandem of Brandner and Jeff Peterson (Sr.-Edina, MN) have been strong at the No. 3 flight this season winning six of seven matches. Overall Brandner and Peterson have racked up an overall record of 8-2. Nordenskjold and Phil Loprinzi (Fr.-Rochester, MN/Mayo) have played all 12 of their matches together at No. 2 doubles tallying an 8-4 record. UW-La Crosse enters the weekend with a dual meet record of 14-6. The Eagles have lost two of their last three matches losing to Winona State (MN) 4-5 and Luther (IA) 1-8 before beating Wartburg (IA) 7-2. La Crosse is led in singles play by senior Jeff Strand who is 15-5 overall including a 10-4 count at No. 5 singles. UW-Oshkosh brings an 11-11 record to Eau Claire. The Titans have neither won nor loss more than three straight meets at any point this season. Oshkosh has lost two consecutive matches falling to Calvin (MI) and Aquinas (MI) by 0-9 scores. Freshman James Lewison has the most singles wins for the Titans going 15-7 including a record of 9-6 at No. 6 singles. UW-Whitewater comes to town ranked 25th nationally and 7th regionally in the most recent Fila NCAA Division III rankings. The Warhawks only two losses this season have come against the two top-ranked teams in the Central Region, losing to top-ranked Gustavus Adolphus (MN) 0-9 and second-ranked DePauw (IN) 1-8. Swedish freshman Robin Borg is ranked 11th among NCAA Division III singles players in the nation. Borg is 14-4 at No. 1 singles for the Warhawks.
