MEN’S TENNIS WINS THIRD STRAIGHT

The UW-Eau Claire men’s tennis team recorded its third straight victory with a 7-2 decision over Hamline University in the Ade Olson Addition of the McPhee Phy Ed Center Friday night.

The Blugolds swept the three doubles matches to open the meet, then followed with wins in four of the six singles matches, three of which included tiebreakers.

The Blugolds’ No. 1 player Tim Eisele (Jr.-Apple Valley, MN) lost a three-set match to Hamline senior Andy Carlson with the third set decided in a tiebreaker.

The senior-dominated Hamline lineup also picked up a victory at No. 2 singles as Jon Breimhorst notched a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Steve Lantz (So.-Rochester, MN/Century).

Junior Erik Brandner (Eau Claire/Memorial) came back from a first-set loss to win his No. 4 singles match for the Blugolds with 7-6, 7-6 decisions in the second and third sets. He pushed his season record to 13-7.

Aaron Nordenskjold (Sr.-Red Wing, MN) upped his season mark to 11-6 with a straight set win at No. 3 singles.

Junior Brett Gressick (De Pere) improved his season record at No. 5 singles to a team-best 19-4 with straight set wins. Freshman Phil Loprinzi (Fr.-Rochester, MN/Mayo) also claimed straight set wins at No. 6 singles to improve his season mark to 7-5.

In doubles, the duo of Brandner and senior Jeff Peterson (Edina, MN) gained an 8-2 triumph at No. 3 doubles to increase its season record to 8-2 as well. Eisele and Lantz combined for an 8-5 triumph at No. 1 doubles and are now 7-5 on the year. Nordenskjold and Loprinzi picked up an 8-4 win at No. 2 and stand 8-4 for the season.

The win boosted the Blugolds’ dual meet record to 11-7 while Hamline, coming off a 5-4 triumph over St. Thomas Monday, fell to 6-6. The Blugolds will close out the season with matches against WIAC opponents UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater next weekend in Eau Claire.
