MEN’S TENNIS EARNS SPLIT

ST. CLOUD – The UW-Eau Claire men’s tennis team earned its first dual win of the season defeating St. Scholastica (MN) 7-2 while losing to Concordia-Moorhead 5-4.

Against the Saints the Blugolds won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches. Tim Eisele (Jr.-Apple Valley, MN) defeated Ryan Anthony 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles followed by Steve Lantz (So.-Rochester, MN/Century) won his match at No. 2 singles defeating Derek Johnson 7-6, 6-3. Erik Brandner (Jr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) earned his first win at No. 4 singles beating Scott Hawley 6-1, 1-6, 7-6. Brett Gressick (Jr.-De Pere) continued the Blugold win streak at No. 5 singles defeating Ryan LaConsiere 6-1, 6-3. Phil Loprinzi (Fr.-Rochester, MN/Mayo) rounded out singles play at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Namanja Radovic.

In doubles action the team of Eisele/Lantz defeated Anthony/Peter Sparby at No. 1 doubles 8-3. Aaron Nordenskjold (Sr.-Red Wing, MN) and Loprinzi defeated Johnson/Hawley at No. 2 doubles 8-4.

The loss to the Cobbers marked the second time in two days that the Blugolds lost 5-4. The Blugolds received wins at the No. 4, 5 and 6 flights in singles play. Brandner defeated Ryan Smith 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, Loprinzi won his match at No. 5 singles over Kirby Johnson 7-6, 7-1 and Gressick defeated Dave Nygaard at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-2. The team of C.J. Rose (Jr.-Lakeville, MN/Apple Valley) and Jeff Peterson (Sr.-Edina, MN) won their No. 3 doubles match over Johnson/Nygaard 8-2.

The Blugolds return home for their first home match of the season when they host Winona State (MN) in the Olson Complex. Action is set to begin at 5:30 P.M.
