SOCCER AND FOOTBALL ATHLETES TABBED FOR CONFERENCE HONORS

MADISON, Wis. - UW-Eau Claire football player Craig Kolb (So.-Marshfield, Wis.) and soccer player Amy Smith (Jr.-Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) have been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players of the week, conference spokesman Matt Stanek has announced.

In this weekend’s homecoming game against sixth-ranked UW-La Crosse, Kolb nailed a game-winning field goal to give the Blugolds a 31-29 victory over the Eagles. After the Blugolds led the entire game, they found themselves down by one point after an Eagle touchdown with 1:17 remaining in the contest. The Blugolds would drive the ball 36 yards on the ensuing drive, setting up a 46-yard field goal attempt for the sophomore kicker. With 24 seconds remaining in the game, Kolb sent the kick right down the center of the uprights to give the Blugolds the edge they needed to pull off the victory. The field goal is tied for fifth longest in school history and is the longest of his career, with his previous long of 41 yards coming in last year’s homecoming victory over UW-River Falls.

Amy Smith increased her goal total to eight on the season and assists total to seven in the Blugolds three victories in this week’s games. In the Blugolds’ 3-0 win over the UW-Stout Blue Devils, Smith assisted on the game’s second and third goals. She also led the Blugolds with six shots in the Stout game, with three being on goal. In Saturday’s 4-3 overtime victory over UW-Stevens Point, Smith assisted on the game-winning goal with just under three minutes remaining in the first overtime. She again led the Blugolds in shots with four. In Sunday’s 3-0 win over Loras College, Smith had a hand in each of the Blugolds’ goals. On the first goal of the game, Amy Smith scored at the midway point in the first period, with Liz Kooistra assisting. On the game’s second goal, Kooistra would score and Amy Smith had the assist. The final goal of the game was also scored by Amy Smith, her eighth on the season, with another assist going to Kooistra. Amy Smith ended the game tied with her sister, Allison, leading the team in shots.
