BLUGOLDS 15TH IN FINAL WINTER DIRECTORS’ CUP STANDINGS
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The UW-Eau Claire athletics program currently ranks 15th out of 420 NCAA Division III programs in the NACDA Directors’ Cup competition for 2007-08. Thus far in 2007-08, the Blugolds have earned points in eight of the nine NCAA championships to which a team or individual was sent. Eau Claire earned 169 points during its fall campaign and 182 for the winter. The most points in the winter were accumulated by the women’s track and field team for an 11th place finish (66 points) at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Women’s basketball earned 50 points, while wrestling captured 41 behind the efforts of Josh Holforty, who took sixth place at the NCAA Championships. The men’s track and field team also finished with 25 points for a 46th place finish at the Championships. The Blugolds’ current point total of 351 is already the sixth highest for the institution in the 13-year history of the all sports competition. The Blugolds have never finished lower than 68th and nine times have finished among the top 30 teams. Their best finishes were eighths in both 1999-00 and 2000-01. In all, six of the nine Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) institutions are in the top 25 in the Directors’ Cup following the final winter standings. La Crosse leads all WIAC schools with a sixth place spot, while Whitewater in less than 30 points behind the Eagles in eighth place. Stevens Point is in 11th, Platteville is 20th and Oshkosh is 23rd. The Sports Academy Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is the program sponsor. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports – nine women’s and nine men’s.
