MEN'S GOLF RANKED NO. 1 IN NATION, FOUR OTHERS RANKED
The UW-Eau Claire men's golf team jumped into the Blugold athletics spotlight this week as it was ranked No. 1 in the Golfstat national rankings that were released today. The Blugold men produced a 54-4-1 record in four competitions this fall during which time they played nine rounds of golf. They won two of the four meets including the prestigious 54-hole, 18-team Twin Cities Classic. They also won their own 36-hole tournament while placing second in the 11-team Central College Fall Classic. They tied for fourth in the 19-team St. John's Invitational. In the Golfstat rankings, which are based on head-to-head competition, the Blugolds rank ahead of perennial NCAA Division III power Methodist College of North Carolina. Rounding out the top 10 are Emory University, CSU-East Bay, Rhodes College, Huntingdon College, Guilford College, St. John's University, Whitworth College and St. John Fisher College. The Blugold women's golf team, which recently won its third consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, is ranked No. 5 in today's Golfstat rankings. The Blugolds are rated behind Methodist, Gustavus Adolphus, DePauw and Middlebury. The top 10 also include UW-Stevens Point, University of St. Thomas, UW-Oshkosh, Wartburg and Oglethorpe University. The Blugold volleyball and soccer teams, which last week wrapped up WIAC regular season titles, also continue to rank nationally. The volleyball team, which will share the crown with either UW-Whitewater or UW-Oshkosh, is ranked No. 5 in the CSTV/AVCA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll, up from No. 6 the previous week. The Blugolds are 22-2 for the season heading into this weekend's UW-River Falls Tournament. The soccer team, which won its second straight WIAC crown with an unblemished 8-0 record, ranks No. 21 in the Division III NSCAA/adidas National Rankings and No. 18 in the D3kicks.com poll. The Blugolds were No. 6 and No. 15, respectively, in the two polls last week but suffered a 1-0 non-conference setback to Macalester during the week which resulted in the fall. The Blugolds have matched the school single season win record with their 17-2 overall record. Also ranked nationally is the Blugold women's cross country team which holds down the No. 19 spot in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association Division III rankings. The Blugolds are headed to their conference meet this weekend. - TP -
