DUNBAR, WESTBROCK NAMED WIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MADISON - UW-Eau Claire volleyball outside hitter Jodi Dunbar (Sr.-Platteville) and soccer defender Becky Westbrock (Sr.-Oakdale, MN/North St. Paul) have been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by conference sports information director Matt Stanek. Dunbar tied a school record for kills in a match as the Blugolds clinched a share of the conference championship with victories at UW-Platteville and UW-La Crosse. Returning to her hometown, Dunbar collected 29 kills and hit .329 in a 3-2 victory over the Pioneers. She tied the school mark set by Marnie Blau against UW-La Crosse on Sept. 2, 1995. In a 3-0 win at UW-La Crosse, Dunbar notched a team-best 14 kills leading the Blugolds to a share of the WIAC regular season title for the first time since 1987. Westbrock led a Blugold defense that allowed just one goal in three matches during the week and earned the WIAC regular season title for the second straight year. UW-Eau Claire clinched the conference crown outright with a 3-0 victory at UW-River Falls on Oct. 21. The Blugolds then upended St. Thomas (Minn.), 3-0, on Oct. 22 with Westbrock being credited with the first goal of the match and assisting on the third goal. UW-Eau Claire suffered just their second loss of the season earlier in the week in a 1-0 defeat at unbeaten and No. 23-ranked Macalester (Minn.) on Oct. 18. UW-Eau Claire had recorded 12 shutouts this season and allowed .42 goals per match. Both the Blugold volleyball and soccer teams are ranked sixth nationally in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Adidas national rankings.
