THREE BLUGOLD ATHLETES TABBED FOR CONFERENCE HONORS

Three UW-Eau Claire athletes have received this week's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the week honors, WIAC information director Matt Stanek has announced.

Linebacker Sam Cummings (Jr.-Rochester, MN/John Marshall) and kicker Craig Kolb (Fr.-Marshfield) were selected for football while sweeper Allison Smith (So.-Bloomington, MN/Jefferson) was tabbed for soccer.

Cummings keyed a Blugold defense that shut out Black Hills State, stopping the Yellowjackets with minus three yards rushing and 125 yards total offense. Cummings led the team with seven tackles including three tackles for loss and two sacks. Black Hills State converted only 1 of 15 third down chances and 1 of 5 fourth down tries.

Kolb, who has stepped into the kicking role that became available when Mitch Schaeuble was sidelined with an injury, booted two field goals (30 and 38 yards) and two extra points against Black Hills. He also averaged 40 yards for four punts and booted his only kickoff 63 yards.

The 20-0 victory was the Blugolds' first of the season and also the first one for new head coach Todd Glaser.

Smith helped the Blugolds run their season record to 4-0 with a 3-0 win over Millikin and a 2-1 decision over Illinois Wesleyan on the road this past weekend. An All-WIAC pick as a freshman last year, Smith spearheaded a defense that allowed Millikin just two shots on goal and Illinois Wesleyan just six shots on goal. The goal scored by Millkin, the only one allowed by the Blugolds in their four starts this season, came on a penalty kick.
