SOBOTTA, IAIZZO NAMED WIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

UW-Eau Claire golfer Meghan Sobotta (Jr.-Independence) and soccer player Maria Iaizzo (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN) been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference athletes of the week in their respective sports, conference sports information director Matt Stanek has announced.

Sobotta was co-medalist along with Gustavus Adolphus' Rachel Roberg in the 20-team UW-Eau Claire Fall Invitational last weekend. The Blugolds finished second as a team to Gustavus which was the NCAA Division III national runner-up last spring. Sobotta fired back-to-back rounds of 76 on the par 72 Mill Run Golf Course Saturday and par 73 Wild Ridge Golf Course Sunday. Sobotta and Roberg were four strokes better than anyone else in the 116-player field.

Iaizzo, a 5-8 senior forward-midfielder, was named the tournament MVP as the Blugolds won the Rachel Smith Memorial Tournament hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York last weekend. She scored the game-winning goal in each game as the Blugolds beat RIT, 2-0, and SUNY-Cortland, 1-0, for the championship.

Other Blugold players of the week, as selected by their respective head coaches, were wide receiver Matt Evensen (Junction City/Auburndale) and cornerback Ryan Schulz (Maple Grove, MN) in football, No. 1 singles player Sarah Riordan (Jr.-Appleton/North) and No. 2 doubles team of Kristie Carlson (Jr.-Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View) and Laura Geissler (Sr.-Coon Rapids, MN) in women's tennis, senior middle hitter Jess Groh (Eau Claire/North) in volleyball, and junior goalkeeper Liz Weirick (Kenosha/Tremper) as the defensive nominee in soccer.
