TRACK AND FIELD COMPLETE DAY ONE OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Eau Claire track and field team had a number of members compete on day one of the 2008 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship at J.J. Keller Field in Oshkosh. Liz Faller (Sr.-Marinette, Wis.) advanced to the finals in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 62.05 for third place in her heat. She had the eighth best time today to qualify for finals, which will take place Saturday at 3:15 p.m. Bridget Wolfe (Sr.-Arcadia, Wis.) competed in four events today as part of the heptathlon. She began the day with the 100-meter hurdles where she took ninth place with a time of 15.43. Wolfe then took third place in the high jump with a leap of 5-3 ¾. Later in the day she competed in the shot put where she took third with a throw of 36-7 ½. In the final heptathlon event of the day, the 200-meter dash, Wolfe placed 17th with a time of 27.63. She currently sits in 6th place overall with 2,811 points. Competition will wrap up Friday with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run. Hayley Suckow (So.-Elk Mound, Wis.) competed in the pole vault, which was one of only three final events today. She finished in 12th place with a height of 11-4 ½. Holly Rollins, a freshman from McMurry University, took home the title with a height of 12-10 ¼. Amy Morse (Jr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) participated in the discus throw. She did not advance to the finals in the event as she finished in 18th place with a throw of 132-9. Only the top nine advanced to the finals. Whitewater’s Dana Thompson was the national champion in the event with a distance of 161-8, the longest throw in Division III this season. Two relay teams, the 4x100-meter and the 4x400-meter relay teams, ran in preliminaries but neither advanced to finals. Faller, Amy Bachinski (So.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH), Briana Berg (So.-Arcadia, Wis.) and Kjersten Holt (Sr.-Long Prairie, Minn./Grey Eagle) ran in the 4x100-meter relay but their time of 48.05 for a third place finish in their heat came up just short of a qualification for finals. Faller, Liz Kooistra (Jr.-Lakeville, Minn.), Laura Broner (Jr.-Madison, Wis./Memorial) and Corrina Saager (Fr.-Wausau, Wis./East) competed in the 4x400-meter relay and finished fourth in their heat with a time of 3:52.46. The time was the 10th best, missing finals qualifying by one spot. On the men’s side, Brian Christ (Sr.-Arcadia, Wis.) finished sixth in his preliminary heat with a time of 54.40 in the 400-meter hurdles. His finish did not allow him to qualify for finals in the event. The second day of the NCAA Championship will begin Friday at 1 p.m. in Oshkosh.
