WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD FINISHES THIRD AT WIAC INDOOR

WHITEWATER – For the second consecutive year, the UW-Eau Claire women’s track and field team finished third with 123 points at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championships at Kachel Fieldhouse.

For the seventh time in eight years, UW-La Crosse won the championship with 205 points. UW-Oshkosh placed second with 134.50 points. Following the Blugolds in fourth was UW-River Falls with 81.50 points. UW-Platteville finished fifth with 59 points, while UW-Stevens Point was sixth with 56 points. In seventh place was UW-Superior with 18 points and in eighth place was UW-Stout with 15 points. Rounding out the field was UW-Whitewater in ninth place with 10 points.

The Blugolds broke three school records and one meet record today. The 4x400-meter relay team broke a school and meet record with winning time of 3:55.28, which also met the Division III automatic qualifying standard. In the 4x200-meter relay event, Eau Claire broke another school record, finishing second with a time of 1:43.48. In the 400-meter dash Liz Kooistra (So.-Lakeville, MN) finished third breaking a school record with a time of 56.65, also an automatic qualifier. Kooistra also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.92.

Chelsea Becker (Sr.-Rice Lake, WI) finished first in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12-3.5. Steph Barnes (Sr.-Sauk City, WI/Sauk Prairie) was second in the pole vault as she also cleared a height of 12-3.5. Both were automatic qualifiers. Becker also placed first in the triple jump with a distance of 37-9.25, a provisional qualifier. Barnes also received the Judy Kruckman Scholar Athlete Award along with Sarah Shettle of UW-Oshkosh.

Liz Faller (Sr.-Marinette, WI) won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.32, a provisional qualifier. Paula Crossfield (Sr.-Madison, WI/East) was another provisional qualifier as she finished seventh in the 20-pound weight throw with a distance of 48-11.

Beth Lutz (So.-Eau Claire, WI/Memorial) placed second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:02.55. Shalene Huth (Sr.-Appleton, WI/West) finished third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.49. Christina Locke (Sr.-Racine, WI/Horlick) was fifth in the one-mile run with a time of 5:06.22.

The UW-Stevens Point Last Chance meet will be next Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. for those trying to make Nationals. The NCAA Indoor Championships will begin in two weeks on March 9th and 10th in Terre Haute, Indiana.
