KOKTA, FALLER SHINE FOR BLUGOLD WOMEN

EAU CLAIRE - Erin Kokta (Sr.-Brookfield East) won the long jump and placed in three other events while Liz Faller (Jr.-Marinette) won the 100-meter hurdles and placed in two other events to lead the UW-Eau Claire women's track team in the Blugold Open on Simpson Field Saturday.

Kokta achieved an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 18' 7.5" in the long jump and also had a provo distance of 37-10 while placing second in the triple jump. She took a third in the high jump at 5-3 and was eighth in the 100-meter dash.

Faller won the hurdles with a 14.60 clocking, which is an NCAA provo time, and also took fourth in the long jump and sixth in the 200-meter dash.

Three other Blugolds were individual winners in the open meet in which 11 colleges were represented. Sophomore Molly Warner (Mosinee) won the 10K race with a time of 38:56.22 and junior Christina Locke (Racine/Horlick) outdistanced the field in the 1500-meter run in 4:54.64. Junior Steph Barnes (Sauk City/Sauk Prairie) was an easy winner in the pole vault with an automatic-qualifying height of 12-2.75, a quarter inch better than her effort in winning the NCAA outdoor championship last spring.

Besides the five individual winners, the Blugolds also won the 400-meter relay and added four seconds and seven thirds. Kjersten Holt (So.-Long Prairie, MN/Grey Eagle) took second in the 200 and added a sixth in the 100. Liz Kooistra (Fr.-Lakeville, MN), the Blugolds' All-Conference soccer player, was second in the 800. Bridget Bocher (Jr.-Watertown) was second in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

Shalene Huth (Jr.-Appleton/West) was third in the 100 and sixth in the long jump. Cassie Haak(Jr.-Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) was third in the 1500 and sixth in the 800.

Jane Marie Ovanin (Sr.-Amherst) took third in the 5000 while Krystyn Stowe (Fr.-Elm Grove/Brookfield East) was third in the 800 and Alecia Ellingstad (Fr.-Eau Claire/Elk Mound) placed third in the pole vault.

The Blugolds captured five of the top eight spots in the 800 and four of the top eight positions in the 100 and 5000. They earned three of the top six places in both the 1500 and the long jump.

Among the participating teams were Bethel College, UM-Duluth, UW-La Crosse, Minnesota-Twin Cities, Northern Iowa, Northern Michigan, UW-River Falls, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stout, UW-Superior, Winona State, St. Mary's University and the College of St. Scholastica.
