WOMEN’S TENNIS TAKES SECOND AT WHITEWATER INVITE

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Eau Claire women’s tennis team took second place today, after finishing with 29 points at the UW-Whitewater Invite.

The Blugolds finished behind the host, UW-Whitewater, who accumulated 47 points. The Blugolds were able to beat four other Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents, including last year’s champion UW-La Crosse, and two other non-conference schools.

In singles play, UW-Eau Claire had one person finish in first place, one in fifth place and one in sixth place. In the number two singles draw, Gina Dahl (So.-Fort Atkinson) defeated UW-Whitewater’s Kara Amundson 6-3 and 6-1 in the championship match to take first place. In the number one singles draw, Sarah Riordan (Sr.-Appleton/North) played in the consolation match but UW-Stevens Point’s Rachel Benn defeated Riordan. In the number three singles draw, the Blugold’s Erin Welch (So.-Tomah) was able to finish in fifth place after defeating Augustana’s Kaitlin Kulovitz 6-2 and 6-3.

The Blugolds had a decent day in doubles play with two teams finishing second and one finishing third. In the number one doubles draw, Kristie Carlson (Sr.-Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View) and Brenna McCormick (So.-Greendale) finished second, after UW-Whitewater’s Ingrid Stensvaag and Tiffany Dawson defeated them 7-6 and 6-3. The other second place finishers for the Blugolds were Liz Deprey (Sr.-Green Bay/Notre Dame) and Kristin Neuman (Sr.-Green Bay/Ashwaubenon), who also lost to UW-Whitewater opponents 6-4 and 7-5. In the third place match in the number three doubles draw, Courtney Lynne (So.-Rochester, MN/Mayo) and Kirsten Marciniak (Fr.-Ham Lake, MN/Blaine) defeated UW-Stout’s Sarah Smith and Jariann Hurlburt 7-5 and 6-1.

The Blugolds are now 8-2 on the season and will continue play next Friday, September 14 when they travel to UW-Stevens Point for their first conference meet.
