WOMEN'S TENNIS CRUISES THROUGH OPENING MATCHES

EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team began its season today with 9-0 sweeps of St. Norbert's and Edgewood College at the Simpson Courts.

Eau Claire started out against St. Norbert's. The number one doubles pair of Sarah Riordan (Jr.-Appleton/North) and Laura Geissler (Sr.-Coon Rapids, MN) squeezed out a 9-8 win. The two pair of Kristie Carlson (Jr.-Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View) and Brenna McCormick (Fr.-Greendale) won 8-1 and Liz Deprey (Jr.-Green Bay/Notre Dame) teamed up with her fellow number three teammate Gina Dahl (Fr.-Fort Atkinson) to post an 8-3 score.

Riordan had more dramatics with a 7-6 first set in singles but then shut down her opponent with a 6-0 set for the win. Number two singles player Dahl was the only Blugold to go three sets in her match, posting tallies of 6-3, 3-6, and 10-3. Carlson won 6-1, 6-3 while Geissler took her sets 6-4, 6-3. Deprey's two sets were both 6-3 and number six player McCormick took her match 6-0, 6-1.

Eau Claire then swept through Edgewood and did not lose one set. Riordan and Deprey were the top doubles tandem against Edgewood and they won 8-1. Carlson teamed up with Geissler for an 8-0 victory. Kristin Neuman (Jr.-Green Bay/Ashwaubenon) and McCormick were the number three team and the won handedly, 8-2.

The singles matches went just as smooth. Riordan won 6-2, 6-0 while Dahl tallied two victories of 6-2. Carlson handled her matches 6-0, 6-3 while Deprey blanked her opponent 6-0 twice. McCormick breezed through on sets of 6-1 and Neuman triumphed 6-2, 6-0 for the number six singles victory.

The team looks to carry its dominance over to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) matches, which occur next Friday at UW-Whitewater. The next day the Blugolds will participate in the Whitewater Invite.
