WOMEN’S TENNIS FALLS TO WASH U IN MIDWEST INVITE
MADISON – The UW-Eau Claire women’s tennis team dropped a 5-3 decision to Washington University of St. Louis in the first round of the Midwest Invitational at Cherokee Country Club here Friday. The Blugolds, who are seeded No. 11 in the 11-team field, won two of three doubles matches against the No. 7 seed Washington. But the Blugolds managed only one singles victory before the match was decided and play was halted. Winning her singles match was junior Liz Deprey (Green Bay/Notre Dame) at the No. 4 spot. After losing her first set, 7-5, she came back for 6-3 and 10-1 victories. She also teamed with Courtney Lynne (Fr.-Rochester, MN/Mayo) to notch a 9-8 triumph at No. 3 doubles. The other Blugold win came from the combo of Kristie Carlson (Jr.-Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View) and Brenna McCormick (Fr.-Greendale) at No. 2 doubles. The Blugolds continue to play without No. 1 player Sarah Riordan (Jr.-Appleton/North) who is sidelined with a leg injury. The Midwest Invitational includes the top teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. The competition is likely to determine some of the at-large berths for the NCAA Division III tournament. WIAC conference champion UW-La Crosse is the sixth seed but has already earned an automatic spot in the NCAA field. The Blugolds, now 14-5 in dual meets this season, will be involved in a round robin series with the other three first-round losers in the Midwest Invite. That competition will be completed Saturday.
