BLUGOLD WRESTLERS COMPETE AT DAN GABLE COLLEGIATE OPEN
OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Eau Claire grapplers competed at the Fifth Annual Dan Gable Colligate Open put on by the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team. The tournament was an individual competition which brought together wresters from all around the Midwest. There were representatives from Northern Illinois University, Northwestern University (Ill.), Purdue University (Ind.), University of Wisconsin, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, and UW-Parkside. Many Blugold wresters turned in great performances. To start, Andy Miller (Jr.-Appleton, WI/North) won the 133 pound weight class round robin tournament with wins by decision over Bill Putman (unattached-Purdue) and Jared Jaminski (UW-Oshkosh). Miller beat Putman 5-2 and Jaminski 7-3. Andrew Johnston (So.-St. Cloud, MN/St. Cloud Tech HS) also turned in a first place finish. Johnson was the fourth seeded wrestler in the 149 pound weight class entering the tournament. On the way to his first place finish, Johnson defeated the number one seed and the number three seed. He defeated, the number one seed, Will McDermott (Northern Illinois University) by a decision of 4-2 in the semi finals and, the number three seed, Eric Seppelt (UW- Lacrosse) by a decision of 9-5 in the championship match. In the 174 pound weight Class, Joey Miller (Sr.-Lake Tomahawk, WI) took second place. Miller lost to Mike Benefiel (unattached- Northwestern) by fall in the championship match. Benefiel was the number one seed and Miller was the number three seed. In the 285 pound weight Class, Nick Hoeft (Sr.-Merrill, WI) took second place. Hoeft entered the competition as the number two seed. He was defeated by fall at the hands of Justin Schmalfeldt (unattached-UW Oshkosh) in the championship match.
