WRESTLERS FINISH SECOND AT TERRY HAWS DUAL TOURNAMENT
COLLEGEVILLE, MN - The UW-Eau Claire wrestling team went a perfect 3-0 in pool play before falling in the championship match to Division II Southwest State (MN) 22-20 to take second place at the eight-team Terry Haws Dual Tournament hosted by St. John's University here today at Sexton Arena.
Davey Starks (Sr.-Stoughton), Chris Muller (Sr.-Rochester, MN/John Marshall), Derek Sikora (Fr.-Neillsville) and Adam Kolo (Sr.-Vespers/Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) all went unbeaten in the tournament for Eau Claire, who entered the tournament without a wrestler at 133.
The Blugolds faced Rochester in the first round of the four team round robin pool. Eau Claire dominated Rochester winning by a score of 34-12. Kolo got the only pin for the Blugolds as he took down Mike Cunningham in 2:23 at the 197 pound weight class.
In the second round the Blugolds faced St. Olaf and defeated the Oles 38-16. Davey Starks, Muller and Ed Rygiel (So.-Boyd/Stanley-Boyd) all pinned their respective opponents for the Blugolds.
The Blugolds moved to the faced Division II MSU-Moorhead to determine the Pool A champion. MSU-Moorhead entered the tournament as the number one seed in Pool A. The Blugolds won six matches against the Mavericks, including pins by Sikora at 165 and Josh Frie (Sr.-Mondovi) at 184 to advance the tournament championship.
In the tournament championship match against Pool B champion Southwest State, the Blugolds won five of nine matches including major decision victories by Starks and Kolo and a pin by heavyweight Nick Campbell (Jr.-Maple Grove, MN) at 1:33.
The Blugolds will next be in action this Friday when the travel to Appleton to battle WIAC opponent Lawrence University. The meet is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
