BLUGOLDS FOURTH AFTER FIRST DAY OF CORNELL INVITATIONAL

MOUNT VERNON, IA - The UW-Eau Claire wrestling team has had five wrestlers advance to the semifinals in holding onto fourth place after the first day of the 25th Annual Cornell Matman Invitational.

Davey Starks (Sr.-Stoughton) and Adam Kolo (Sr.-Vesper/Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) came into the tournament seeded number one in their respective weight classes. Starks received a bye in the first round and moved to the semifinals with a 9-5 decision over UW-Platteville's John Steinhauer. Kolo advanced to the semifinals by pinning Matt Joseph of Loras College at 1:19.

Troy Seubert (Sr.-Maple Grove, MN) was seeded second in his weight class and used a 6-4 decision in the opening round and a 9-3 decision in the second round to advance to the semifinals. Chris Muller (Sr.-Rochester, MN/John Marshall) was seeded third at 157 coming in. Muller scored an 11-0 major decision to start off and moved forward to the semifinals with a 7-1 decision.

Derek Sikora (Fr.-Neillsville) came in seeded sixth and pinned third-seeded William Slayton of Platteville at 5:17 to advance to the semifinals. Josh Frie (Sr.-Mondovi) and Larry Moen (So.-Madison/East) both won their opening round match but fell in their second match.

After the first day Coe College is out in front with Central College and Platteville tied for second.

The invitational will conclude tomorrow with wrestling resuming at 10 a.m.
