WOMEN’S HOCKEY IS HANDED FIRST CONFERENCE LOSS
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Eau Claire women’s hockey team was shutout 1-0 by Conference opponent UW-River Falls. It was the first time the Blugolds have been shutout this season. The loss puts the Blugolds record at 7-5 overall and 4-1 in Northern Colligate Hockey Association play. The only goal of the game was scored early in the first period when Jenna Scanlon knocked in a puck right on the doorstep of the goal at 6:02. The goal was assisted by Stefanie Schmitz and Renae Bergh. River Falls continued to dominate play for the rest of the first period as they outshot Eau Claire 10-1 in the first period. However, the momentum shifted in the second period as Eau Claire outshot River Falls 10-2. Fortunately for River Falls, goaltender Cassi Campbell stood on her head and stopped all 10 Blugold shots. After each team controlled one of the first two periods, play evened out a bit in the third period. In the third the action went up and down the ice, but neither team was able to beat the opposing goaltender. With a minute and 17 seconds left, Eau Claire decided to pull their goalie. At this time they were awarded a power play as well. However, the six on four skater advantage did not prove to be enough as the buzzer sounded without the Blugolds lighting the lamp. In net, Lindsay Savat (Fr.-Apple Valley, MN/Thomas Jefferson) turned in a great performance as she turned away 16 of 17 shots in a losing effort. The loss was Savat’s first of the season. She is now 4-1. Neither team fared too well on the power play. Both the Falcons and the Blugolds went 0-5 with the skater advantage. The Blugolds will have a while to think about this tough loss. Their next game is not till Friday, January 11, 2008. During that weekend, the Blugolds will travel to UW-Superior for a Friday game and to Finlandia University (Mich.) for a Saturday game.
